How does "Where am I" work?
There are two primary ways websites determine your location: IP Address Geolocation and GPS/HTML5 Geolocation.
- IP Geolocation: This is an estimate based on the IP address assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider. It is usually accurate to the city or region level, but rarely pinpoints your exact house.
- HTML5 Geolocation (GPS): This uses your device's built-in GPS chip or nearby Wi-Fi networks to pinpoint your exact coordinates. This requires explicit permission from you in the browser.
